Charles Tyson Obituary

Charles Clinton Tyson, JD, 82, of Unity Township, Latrobe, passed away peacefully Thursday,  March 7, 2024, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh PA.  Born March 12, 1941, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Charles Francis and Elizabeth (Hess) Tyson.  Known to his friends and family as ‘Chuck’, Mr. Tyson was a longtime parishioner of St. Vincent Basilica Parish, Latrobe. He enjoyed reading, maps, traveling and sightseeing, watching movies at home and spending quality time with his grandsons. He also had enjoyed wine tasting gatherings with his best friend Mike Schmit when living in Virginia.  Charles is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorcas (Shick) Tyson; sons Michael Charles (Amanda) of Greensburg, Matthew Scott (Rebecca) of Louisa VA and Gregory Allan of Greensburg; brothers Ronald (Jo Ann) of Port Allegany PA and Wayne (Jeff Mitcham) of Union City PA; sisters Janet Love of Union City PA, Marlene Rose (Timothy) of Erie PA and Rita (John) Mineo, of Union City PA; grandsons Jacob Tyson of Louisa VA and Joey Tyson of Greensburg, step granddaughter Katlyn Welsh of Greensburgh and 10 nephews and seven nieces (from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Colorado, North Carolina and Denmark). Close relatives preceding Charles to the Kingdom of Heaven include, among others, grandson little Colin David Tyson, niece Jenine Mineo and sister-in-law Patricia Curran.  Charles was very proud of his sons and their families. He was a wonderful provider and always made sure his family was top of mind. Over the years, he went on numerous vacations that created golden family memories. Some of these included:  the road trips to Florida and Texas to visit relatives, a journey by rail to Mexico City, a trip out West to see the Grand Canyon; Ontario and Quebec; Paris and London; California, Las Vegas and Cancun.  While living in Virginia, Charles also relished accompanying his pilot son Matthew on numerous flights in light aircraft to visit family in Pennsylvania, as well as jaunts to Atlantic City NJ, Hilton Head SC, Cleveland OH, Chicago and Colorado. While retired in Pennsylvania, he enjoyed accompanying son Mike to cheer on his grandson at the young slugger’s baseball games; and enjoyed helping son Gregory with home improvements. He also made frequent trips back to Virginia to visit Matthew’s family there. He took great pride that all three of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and joined them on numerous weekly Boy Scout meetings and camping outings.  He also made annual summer visits to the Canadohta Lake ‘resort’ in northwestern PA, creating countless memories with family with activities centered around big family meals and fun conversation, pontoon boating and swimming.  An alumnus of Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic High School, Class of 1959, Charles graduated with a B.A. in Economics from St. Vincent College, Latrobe, in 1963. He was accepted into the U.S. Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Ensign in November 1963, serving during the Vietnam conflict and in the Naval Reserves for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Charles was also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1971. Charles spent most of his career employed as a tax law attorney for the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC.  There will be no viewing. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 am Friday, March 15, at St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. Full military honors by VFW Post #33 honor guard and entombment will follow at the nearby Mary, Mother of Mercy Mausoleum Chapel, concluding with a memorial luncheon at the St. Vincent Grove.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Vincent College, Latrobe PA or Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh PA.
