Ray Shick Obituary

Ray J. Shick, 70, of Weltytown, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at his home. He was born June 9, 1948, in Latrobe, a son of the late Raymond A. and Marie E. (Brinker) Shick. Ray served in the Army during the Vietnam era, and prior to retirement worked as a welder for Penelec in Indiana, Pa. He was a member of St. Raymond of the Mountains Catholic Church, Donegal, Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association, United Slovak Club and Kecksburg Firemen's Club. Ray was an active member and past president of the Mt. Pleasant Township Lions Club, he received the Lions' Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his humanitarian service, was current White Cane chairman and was active with the sub sale and pancake breakfast. Everyone looked forward to getting their breakfast made by him at the Lions Club food booth at the county fair. Thank you to all the special men in those clubs that have impacted his life and the community. He was known to many as Ray J. or Pap. He never missed one of his grandchildren's activities; they were the light of his life. He was a loving and devoted husband and is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna R. (Linsenbigler) Shick; his son, Adam Shick and wife, Katy, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his daughter, Stacy Hayes and husband, Adam, with whom he shared a special bond, of Mt. Pleasant Township; seven grandchildren, Ava and Owen Shick and Reed (fiancee Brittany Coles), Cole, Emma, Clay and Levi Hayes; his sister, Barbara Chackan and husband, Larry, of Hastings, Minn.; niece and nephew, Kurt and Ramie Chackan and great-niece, Adelyn; a special brother-in-law, George Soflak and wife, Stephanie, of Mammoth; nephew, George Soflak and his wife, Caroline and great-nephew, Klye Soflak; and niece, Jacqueline Rodriguez and great-niece, Courtney Wild. He enjoyed dinner every Tuesday with a special group of friends. He thought of his friends and neighbors as family. He enjoyed the time he spent with his buddies, Patsy Solo, Don Scott and Jay Kromer. Ray J. was always happy and willing to help anyone, and he always did. He was a kind and gentle soul who cherished the people in his life. He never met a stranger. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity. Prayers will begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Raymond of the Mountains Catholic Church, 170 School House Lane, Donegal. Mt. Pleasant Township Lions Club will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Pleasant Township Lions Club, P.O. Box 156, Norvelt, PA 15674, or to Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association, 911 Porter Ave., Scottdale, PA 15683. In addition, spend time with your family, take your grandchildren to the park, take them fishing and let them jump in mud puddles, buy the tractor and make a toast to enduring friendships, lifelong and beyond. In the end, it's about the lives you've impacted along the way. Thanks for a great ride, Ray J! www.bachafh.com.
