November 9, 1923 ~ June 19, 2022 (age 98)

Obituary

John Oliver “Jack” Manning, 98, passed away peacefully during the evening hours of June 19, 2022. Jack was born in Salem Township on November 9, 1923, to John Patrick Manning and Mary Elizabeth Deemer. He graduated from Greensburg Salem High School in 1941 and then began his 40+-year career with the Bell Telephone companies in Greensburg, PA and in Tucson, AZ. He began as a pole-climber and lineman and ended his career as a Field Engineer in the Planning Division.

Jack had a break in his telephone company career due to WW II and his service in the US Army. He served in France and Germany, earning a battle ribbon for his participation in the Battle of the Bulge. Jack was in the Army Signal Corp and reached the rank of Master Sergeant by the War’s end.

Jack was married to Mary Evelyn (Sowash) Manning for 50+ years. Mary died on March 14, 1998 at the age of 72. Together they had seven children, three of whom predeceased him: Bonnie L. (Manning) Long (1944-2020), Karen A. (Manning) Steiner (1950-2007), and Cheryl L. (Manning) Stauffer (1952-2005). The surviving children are: John T. “Terry” Manning and wife, Jan, of San Antonio, TX, Linda S. Manning and wife, Lynn, of Phoenix, AZ, Kevin L. Manning and husband, Joe, of Thousand Palms, CA, and Robert G. (“Bobby”) Manning and wife, Lisa, of Tucson, AZ. Jack is further survived by nine Grandchildren: Mary Anne (Long) King, Thomas J. “TJ” Long II, James P. “Jimmy” Manning, Rachel F. Manning, Kim (Steiner) Roberts, Kristin, Matthew and Jonathan Steiner, and Luke Stauffer. In addition, Jack is further survived by seven Great Grandchildren: Ashley, Katie, Aly, Dylan, Lexi, Emma and Max. Last, and certainly not least, Jack’s first Great Great Grandchild, Scarlett, has joined the family.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg.  Prayers will begin at 9:00 AM Thursday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass to be celebrated at 9:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg. Entombment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum with Full Military Honors accorded by the VFW Post No. 33, Greensburg Honor Guard.

Jack’s children would like to offer a special thank you to Mary Anne King and TJ Long and their spouses, James and Jennifer. They went above and beyond in attending to our Dad’s needs over the years, and especially since the death of our sister and their Mom, Bonnie. He was very appreciative of being included in their lives. He spoke often of his pride in their accomplishments in life and the people they have become. We certainly believe this as well and are very grateful for their efforts. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
